As a long-term partner of the agency, the University marketing team challenged Humaan with reimagining one of their core student recruitment initiatives – Open Day 2023.

Challenge
Like many higher education institutions, Open Days remain an essential method of promoting life on campus and communicating the broad range of courses on offer.
The online experience is often the first touch point for prospective students, creating awareness of the day and providing essential information to inform their decision making and helping them make the next step in their educational journey.
The challenge for Curtin was to ensure that the online experience had a fresh and engaging design treatment to ensure stand-out in a cluttered market, whilst accounting for the geographical and wayfinding requirements that came from promoting a vast, provincial campus location with many events occurring simultaneously.

Feature-Packed Experience
With so much activity happening throughout the day, prioritising, selecting and scheduling was an essential part of the experience. Navigating the large campus and locating the different buildings can be challenging for people unfamiliar with the University and this required an intuitive approach to the information architecture, leading with clear communication around time and location. Multiple views were created to allow audiences to filter activity by subject matter, geographical location and time – with functionality available to create bespoke days plans.


Way Finding
The online experience remained essential for audiences throughout the day with access to the site being delivered through mobile devices. Prospective students were able to take advantage of the saved day plans on their mobiles with the API integration of MazeMap giving them real-time information around location, how to get there, parking features and accessibility advice for people with disabilities.

An Extendable System
Knowing that Open Days will remain a key student acquisition initiative in the future, Humaan created a flexible and modular design system with reusable development assets so that key pieces of functionality could be repurposed for future events across the University.
